Soundteckz Exclusive Interview

SMM: How long have you been producers?
Soundteckz: We started producing, out of necessity, back in 2003.

SMM: How did you join forces?
Soundteckz: Well first off, we’re brothers, so to some degree, we we’re already joined. I (Optimus Grime) started producing solo for a few people, and my brother (Lawcifer) would, sometimes, provide me with samples and ideas, and advise me on what would actually make my beats sound more interesting. In return, I taught him what I knew about beat production, and he started to make his own beats. It was only natural that we would join up.

SMM: What was the best piece of equipment or program you purchased?
Soundteckz: I would have to say our sound system. Without a decent sound system, its hard to hear every aspect of the beat. It may sound one way on one system, but totally different on another. As producers we need to be able to hear everything that’s going on to make sure there are no hitches or glitches, and that all the levels are good. We won’t say any name brands until we start getting endorsement deals!

SMM: How would you describe your signature sound?
Soundteckz: Sample heavy, Grimey, Old school, Hardcore Hip Hop. Our music is heavily influenced by the gritty sounds of early 90s Hip Hop. Our beats would fit in nicely on any Onyx, DMX, or Wu Tang album, however, we can and have produced “Top 40” type beats in the past….reluctantly.

SMM: Who are some of the people you worked with?
Soundteckz: We’ve worked with a lot of local acts (Syx Slim, Big O, Snipez, Drastic, Razor Blade, Zelakhan, MR 44, Zelakhan, Paulie Rhyme, Phoenix Jones, Shugabooga, Machine Gun Kelly, D-Werd, Nuf-Sed, Chevy Blue, Summer Azul) and have a few projects on deck with a couple more as well as some out of state artists.

SMM: What is your favorit studio momment?
Soundteckz: Our favorite studio moment has to be when we all were in the lab, and Syx Slim recorded for 8 hours STRAIGHT! At the end of the day we had about 15 tracks recorded, mixed, and mastered. That took discipline, hard work and a lot of dedication.

SMM: What's your top 5 producers of all time?
Soundteckz: RZA, Havoc, Primo, DJ Muggs, Rick Rubin

SMM: Being from Ohio how do you feel Bootsy Collins & Roger Troutman influenced music?
Soundteckz: Bootsy Collins was an innovator who brought his own crazy sound to the table that people were feeling, and he was able to make hybrid music: part soul and part rock n roll. Roger Troutman also did his thing, influencing producers on both coasts, as well as providing some of the most classic samples in the industry and the voice box.

SMM: What are some artist, that you want to work with?
Soundteckz: La Coka Nostra, JMT, Necro, M.O.P., Onyx, Wu Tang Clan, honestly…there are too many to name. We would love to work with any of the artists that we grew up listening to!

SMM: What is your favorite beat of all time?
Soundteckz: Optimus Grime: My personal Favorite would have to be Mobb Deeps “Shook Ones Pt II” That beat is just the apex of grimey! Lawcifer: My favorite beat of all time is a toss up between RZA’s “Tragedy” and Cormegas “Dead Man Walking”…

SMM: Any last words or shoutouts
Soundteckz: Yeah…Get Hip or Get Hit! Shout outs to Sincere, Quincy, and Shugabooga. You guys opened a lot of doors for us, and we appreciate it! All the artists who ever used one of our beats, lets get it crackin, and make it happen!
