The Mothership Returns: Dr. Funkenstein Touches Down at ESSENCE Fest 2026

NEW YORK, NY — March 26, 2026 — Fifty years after it first touched down in New Orleans, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic will bring the legendary Mothership stage show back to the city where history was made. Closing out the ESSENCE Festival of Culture® on July 5th, this performance signals more than just a musical event; it is a monumental cultural homecoming.

Now in his mid-80s and still commanding the stage with unmatched energy, Clinton’s appearance at ESSENCE—a stage known for showcasing icons of Black music and culture—will be a once-in-a-generation moment. It is a celebration that honors the past, celebrates the present, and gives a definitive glimpse into what’s next for the P-Funk legacy.

A Galactic Legacy Reborn

Originally designed by lighting visionary Jules Fisher for the 1976 P-Funk Earth Tour, the physical Mothership famously descended from arena ceilings as Clinton emerged as Dr. Funkenstein, forever altering the landscape of live concert production.

The initial landing was heralded as "the greatest single moment in the history of rock n' roll." While the original spacecraft now resides as a permanent artifact in the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture, a new and technologically advanced version is currently being constructed at the renowned Rock Lititz production campus.

The ESSENCE Festival of Culture® performance will mark the very first sighting of this new ship as Clinton prepares to take the spectacle on a worldwide tour.

A Full-Circle Production

Clinton’s management has engaged Chew Entertainment, the New Jersey-based cultural consultancy led by longtime collaborator Vivian Scott Chew, to produce this historic event. Chew’s visionary leadership was instrumental in forging the iconic 1996 Mothership landing in Central Park, an event released in conjunction with the album T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. (The Awesome Power of A Fully Operational Mothership).

Joining the team is David Rodriguez, Executive Producer at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, whose collaboration is vital to executing this ambitious celebration.

"To celebrate George in New Orleans, where the Mothership first touched down, is a beautiful full-circle moment," says Vivian Scott Chew. "The weekend will be about more than music—it's about community, legacy, and making space for the next generation to carry the funk forward."

The Architect of Modern Music

George Clinton’s impact spans generations and genres, serving as the foundational influence for everything from the West Coast G-funk of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube to the modern mastery of Outkast, Kendrick Lamar, and Janelle MonĂ¡e.

A GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Hollywood Walk of Fame, Clinton continues to shape the evolution of Black music and culture.

Don't miss the landing. The funk is back.
